FORT COLLINS, CO - AUGUST 18: Colorado State Rams receiver Tory Horton (14) poses for a portrait at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins on Thursday, August 18, 2022.

WR Horton Answers Coach Norvell’s Challenge

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In August, Colorado State head football coach Jay Norvell issued what many considered a bold proclamation about wide receiver Tory Horton.

“Tory’s an all-conference player that should be a draft pick,” said Norvell.

Until recently, Horton was somewhat of an enigma in the broader landscape of college football. He had been a star on his team, earning all-conference honors in the Mountain West last season. His tenure at Nevada for two seasons had also been productive, but his name didn’t ring many bells beyond the hardcore followers of the sport.

A Star-Making Performance Against Colorado

BOULDER, CO – SEPTEMBER 17: In the first overtime at Folsom Field, Tory Horton #14, wide receiver for the Colorado State Rams, takes control of the ball following a successful catch.

Despite Colorado State losing on Saturday night to in-state rival Colorado in double overtime, it is safe to say Tory Horton is now a name recognized across the college football universe.

Horton caught 16 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown against the 18th-ranked Buffaloes in a hostile Folsom Field in Boulder. His statistics that night were nothing short of phenomenal; Horton caught nearly half of the Rams’ total completed passes. Quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi ended the day 34-of-47, showing undeniable chemistry with his wide receiver.

Perhaps most surprising was Horton’s versatility. In an end-around play that caught the Buffaloes’ defense off-guard, Horton executed a 30-yard pass to Dallin Holker, tying the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. It wasn’t just a momentary dazzle; it shifted the momentum of the game, at least temporarily in favor of the Rams.

Although Colorado State couldn’t seal the victory—they were leading 28-17 with just over 11 minutes left in the game—Horton’s performance did not go unnoticed.

Accolades and Recognition: The Aftermath of Horton’s Breakout Game

In the days following the contest, Horton has become a national talking point. The Reese’s Senior Bowl honored him as the co-offensive player of the week alongside LSU’s quarterback, Jayden Daniels, who completed 30 of 34 passes in LSU’s 72-10 blowout of Grambling State. Horton was also feted by the East-West Shrine Bowl, receiving the title of Offensive Breakout Player of the Week.

It’s not just accolades from college football institutions; Horton has caught the attention of NFL scouts. According to HeroSports.com, Horton now sits atop the Mountain West NFL draft board, rating him as the top pro prospect in the conference. This meteoric rise suggests that Coach Norvell’s preseason challenge was not just prophetic; it was transformative for Horton’s athletic career.

Colorado State may have fallen to 0-2 on the season with the loss to Coach Prime and Colorado, but individual triumph has given the Rams and their fans something to cheer about.

What the Future Holds for Tory Horton

Looking ahead, Tory Horton seems primed for a strong finish to his college career and a likely NFL draft pick. He’s shown that he can excel against top-level competition, and his skill set as a versatile offensive weapon will make him highly attractive to pro teams. With a large part of the season still to go, Horton has the chance to further cement his draft stock and make the Rams a force to be reckoned with in the Mountain West.

Coach Jay Norvell’s challenge may have seemed audacious at the time, but Tory Horton has answered that call in the most emphatic way possible. Now, with each game, Horton has the chance to not only fulfill his coach’s prediction but to create a legacy of his own, both in Colorado State’s record books and potentially in the NFL.

The Ripple Effect on Colorado State and the Mountain West Conference

Tory Horton’s breakout performance doesn’t just bode well for his future; it also casts a brighter spotlight on Colorado State and the Mountain West Conference as a whole. With a star player like Horton drawing national attention, it’s likely that more eyes will be on the Rams as the season progresses. It also offers other players on the team an elevated platform to showcase their skills.

But there’s more than just individual or school recognition at stake. Horton’s exceptional performance may act as a catalyst for the Rams to turn their season around. Although the team is 0-2, they showed flashes of brilliance in the game against Colorado

A Season-Defining Moment Ahead

The next few games will be a crucial test for both Horton and the Colorado State Rams. As they prepare to face tough opponents in their conference, the question is whether Horton’s standout performance was a one-time spectacle or a sign of things to come. A consistent showing could not only solidify Horton’s draft stock but also rejuvenate a struggling Rams team.

For Coach Norvell, Horton’s rise could signify the beginning of a turnaround for a program seeking to make its mark. The coming weeks will be telling, but for now, the spotlight is squarely on Tory Horton, and he seems ready to shine.
